How to Pray for Yourself

If you are anything like me, as a Christian woman, you find yourself praying more for others than yourself. That is so my current experience. The most amusing part is when I pray for myself, it is to ask for the strength to recover or handle something difficult. That’s not praying to thrive. That is just praying to survive. I’m not sure that “surviving” is all God has in store for me. I think He wants more for me and for you. That is why I decided to write about how to pray for yourself. The intent is to inspire Bible-based prayers that put both of us back on our prayer list.

Have you been taught that intercession should focus only on others?

Perhaps you’ve felt guilty asking God to meet your personal needs, believing that such requests may impede the selflessness that prayer embodies.

You’re not alone in grappling with this feeling, as many people wrestle with the notion that praying for oneself may seem selfish or unworthy.

I want you to remember that it is essential to recognize that God desires a relationship with us that encompasses every aspect of our lives.

He’s not only interested in us on our “good day.” That’s performance-based religion. who needs it?

Our heavenly Father is also concerned with our personal struggles and desires.

Bringing our needs before Him is what builds intimacy and trust. I think it is because when we do, we feel His peace and acceptance.

This allows us to feel safe to grow spiritually while also interceding for the needs of those around us.

Prayer for ourselves involves a balance that reflects the complexities of our human experience.

We are not to be consumed with ourselves, but He doesn’t want us to ignore ourselves either!

I’ve watched old television shows that have such horrible theology. One is the seventies sitcom, Good Times.

In one episode, the mother said something like, “We are not supposed to use prayers for personal favors.”

I was like, then where do we turn when we need a Savior? Crazy.

But here’s the truth: learning how to pray for yourself is not only biblical—it’s vital for your spiritual and emotional well-being. In fact, Jesus often withdrew to pray and refresh Himself (Luke 5:16). If He saw the need to connect with the Father for strength, wisdom, and peace, shouldn’t we do the same?

Sister, it’s time to let go of the guilt. When you understand how to pray for yourself in alignment with God’s Word, your prayers will become powerful, transformative, and pleasing to God.

The Bible gives us many examples of people praying for themselves—honestly, passionately, and faithfully:

  • David cried out, “Create in me a clean heart, O God
” (Psalm 51:10)
  • Hannah prayed for a child in deep anguish (1 Samuel 1:10–11)
  • Jesus prayed for Himself in the Garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:42)

These prayers weren’t selfish; they were rooted in faith and trust in God’s will.

If you’ve ever wondered how to pray for yourself, start by remembering that God wants to hear from you—about your struggles, dreams, and even your uncertainties. Your heart matters to Him.

How to Pray for Yourself Without Guilt

  1. Start With Worship
Open your prayer by acknowledging who God is. Worship is where everything begins, in my opinion! Go ahead, praise Him for His mercy, sovereignty, and love. This aligns your heart and mind with God’s presence.“Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise
” (Psalm 100:4)
  2. Confess and Cleanse
Invite the Holy Spirit to reveal any sin or burden you’re carrying. Confession brings spiritual freedom and intimacy with God.“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us
” (1 John 1:9)
  3. Speak God’s Promises Over Your Life
When thinking about how to pray for yourself, remember that praying Scripture is one of the most effective ways to align your heart with God’s will.
  4. Be Specific and Bold
Don’t hesitate to tell God exactly what you need. Whether it’s clarity, emotional healing, financial provision, or spiritual boldness, go to Him in full faith.“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find
” (Matthew 7:7)

I just recently wrote about accepting the timings and seasons changes of our lives. You can go ahead and read that here. I think knowing how to pray for yourself means learning to pray through all of life’s ups and downs:

If you’re still not sure how to pray for yourself, start simple: “Lord, help me.” Or “Jesus, I need You today.” He hears even the shortest, most broken prayers.

A few years ago, I went through a deep season of burnout and confusion. I was praying for everyone—my spouse, my children, friends at church—but I wasn’t praying for myself.

One morning, I realized I hadn’t talked to God about my own heart in months.

I had grown resentful, dry, and distant.

That day, I wrote in my journal: “Lord, I’ve forgotten me. Help me trust that You care for me, too.”

That moment shifted my entire prayer life.

It taught me how to pray for myself with boldness and trust. I’m still on the journey, and you are welcome to join me. Put yourself back on your prayer list!

Sister, God wants you to thrive—spiritually, emotionally, and physically. You can’t pour into others from an empty vessel. Knowing how to pray for yourself will help you live from a place of strength and spiritual fullness.

So, start today. Lift your hands, lift your heart, and pray over your own life like you mean it.

You matter to God. Your voice matters in prayer.
