How Can I Be Righteous – Christian Women Tips

“How can I be righteous?” It’s a question I’ve whispered in prayer many times—maybe you have too. There is a phrase in my culture that simply says, “I just want to be right.” It’s not referring to conquering an argument, but being “right” in the eyes of the Lord. I remember many women and men ending or beginning their testimonies with that phrase. I never forgot it.

In a world that constantly pushes us to compromise, compare, and conform, the pursuit of righteousness can feel like trying to hold onto a soap bubble. But here’s the truth: God never intended righteousness to be complicated or unattainable.

Let’s take this journey together, as sisters in Christ, and answer this timeless question with truth, love, and practical steps.

I hope you are encouraged after reading. I pray I am, too.

How to be a righteous person?

At its root, righteousness means being right with God.

It’s not about being perfect or religiously polished—it’s about living in a way that honors God, reflects His holiness, and follows His Word.

The Bible says:

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” – Matthew 6:33

So the real question becomes: How can I be righteous in real life?

Not just in church, but in traffic (Ugh!), in conflict, in temptation, and in my day-to-day thoughts?

Without righteousness, we drift.

Our prayers feel dry.

Our decisions are more impulsive. We become spiritually “off.”

“The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble.” – Proverbs 4:19

Righteousness isn’t about trying to earn salvation—that’s already ours in Christ. It’s about living out our identity as God’s daughters, set apart and empowered.

I’m not perfect, so don’t judge me. But, I do often ponder, how to be a righteous person.

Right now, I do not really have a car. That bugs me.

My engine light has been on for months, but my husband said, “Don’t worry about it, it’s nothing.” I’ve had lots of unrighteous thoughts about that. It makes me mad and exacerbates my sadness and depression.

I sigh, repent, and continue to trust God with the situation. I keep my mouth shut. Maybe it’s God’s plan that I be home right now so I can heal. Perhaps, He is teaching me to wait.

Back in the day, I would think I would need to get saved again because I had “unrighteous” thoughts or angry thoughts.

That’s foolish!

Our salvation is secure. Jesus did the work to ensure it. But, I need to learn patience and keep my thoughts right.

That’s my example. Let me share some others as case studies. These are fictional but based on people I’ve known or talked to. Clearly the names are not actual people.

Tasha is a young professional working in a competitive corporate setting.

She’s smart, ambitious, and driven—but her quiet time with the Lord keeps getting pushed aside by early meetings, social media, and work stress.

One night, after a rough day, she cries out: “How can I be righteous when I barely make time for God?”

The answer came gently: “Start again. One moment with Me is better than hours without Me.”

She began setting her alarm just 15 minutes earlier for prayer and reading a Psalm. She also started journaling about what she read.

Over time, that habit grew into daily strength, clarity, and deeper spiritual sensitivity.

This can be a tough one. Some of the best shows often go against our Godly values. Long time ago, there was a show called “Once Upon a Time.” I loved it! It used fairytale characters as modern-day figures. There was one character that was clearly representative of a demon.

The Holy Spirit showed me that, and I felt He was telling me to stop watching it.

So, I did.

Linda is a mom of teens and works full time.

She loves the Lord but recently noticed herself becoming impatient, sharp-tongued, and weary.

“I love God,” she says, “but I don’t feel like I’m living righteously.”

After talking with a mentor, she began journaling her prayers each morning, including confessions and requests for strength. She also rejoined a Bible study group. Within weeks, her peace returned, and her responses softened.

Takeaway: How can I be righteous? Often, it’s by returning to what nourishes your soul—His Word, His presence, and supportive community.

Let’s be honest: we’ve all had seasons when we weren’t walking righteously. What does that look like?

Her answer came during a morning devotion she reluctantly read: “Return to Me.”

She created a weekly schedule to include Bible reading, service projects, and meeting with her granddaughters for prayer. That decision revived her joy.
