Bible study journaling isn’t just about writing words on a page—it’s a powerful way to connect with God, process your emotions, and bring clarity to your life. It creates a safe, sacred space for your thoughts, prayers, and spiritual reflections. And more importantly, it becomes a beautiful, healing rhythm in your walk with God.
That’s exactly why I wrote about Bible study journaling. It became my spiritual lifeline. In seasons of chaos, grief, and confusion, journaling helped me find peace, hear God more clearly, and strengthen my faith when I needed it most.
Let’s walk through how to begin your own Bible study journaling journey—and why it just might be the habit that changes everything.
Whether you’re struggling to stay consistent in your Christian faith, battling stress and anxiety, or simply looking for a way to draw closer to God, my book will help you navigate your journey with purpose and intention.
Let me tell you my best tip.
What Is Bible Study Journaling?
Bible study journaling is the practice of writing your thoughts, prayers, and reflections as you read and meditate on Scripture. It’s not about being perfect or poetic.
It’s about being present. When you journal through the Bible, you slow down, reflect, and allow God to speak through His Word—and sometimes through your own honest words.
It’s not a trend. It’s a spiritual tool. And it can anchor you in every season.
How to Start Bible Study Journaling
Before you grab a pen or a journaling Bible, take a moment to define your “why.”
Step 1: Define Your Journaling Goal
Ask yourself:
- Are you looking to deepen your prayer life?
- Do you need a way to manage stress and anxiety?
- Are you trying to draw closer to God or better understand His Word?
Your goal shapes your journaling experience. When I started, I was dealing with grief. Journaling through the Psalms brought so much comfort—more than I expected. Bible study journaling helped me externalize what I was bottling up inside. That alone was healing.
Bible Study Journaling Tip 1: Release it
Get “them” feelings out!
Bible Study Journaling Tip 1: Release It
Let your journal be your emotional and spiritual outlet. Don’t censor your pain, frustration, or confusion. Journaling gives those feelings somewhere to go—so they don’t stay stuck inside you.
As WebMD notes, journaling can reduce anxiety and may even encourage you to reach out for support. That happened to me more than once. An article titled “How Journaling Can Help Ease Anxiety and Encourage Healing ” suggests that journaling might inspire you to “reach out for social support.”
Writing helped me realize I needed to talk to a friend—or just admit that I was not okay.
Come to think of it, I’ve often been inspired to talk to my friends or husband about some of my journal entries.
This is especially true during the throes of my grief journey when some of my writings actually worried me.
In those days, I felt desolate and in deep despair.
Journaling helped me realize I was simply wounded and I was normal.
Oh yes, sometimes I write affirmations from what I read in the Bible during my Bible study journaling time. I wrote a blog post about Godly affirmations here. Check it out!

Bible Study Journaling Tip 2: Look for Patterns
When you journal consistently, you’ll start noticing patterns in your thoughts and spiritual growth. A recurring Scripture. A prayer you keep repeating. A theme God keeps bringing up. That’s the Holy Spirit gently guiding you.
Bible study journaling turns your quiet time into a two-way conversation with the Lord.
Bible Study Journaling is Anointed!
Something genuinely spiritual happens when we invite the Holy Spirit into our journaling sessions.
As I pour my thoughts onto the page, I find that Jesus speaks through my own words! Wild! This guides me in ways I never could have anticipated.
The same can happen for you!
Here is what I think happens:
His truths begin to illuminate our understanding, casting light on the shadows of doubt and confusion.
I need that light right now.
After the last several years, I realize I am not myself.
Maybe I never will be again.
My friend Marcella tells me your life becomes a new sort of normal after loss.
I think she is right.
Well, I have not defined that new normal yet. I still have that feeling of lostness and deep grief.
Journaling soothes me so much – as does reading Psalms.
Sometimes, I will read Psalms and journal about them to allow them to comfort me on a deeper level.
This is such a blessing and gives me peace in God’s Word.
Back to journaling in general…
Journaling is such a beautiful space of personal reflection. You will find so much occurring as you journal.

It becomes part of you!
This whole journaling thing turns into a really personal ritual, where every word we write and each thought we jot down feels like a little moment of worship.
In Bible Study Journaling, we’re not just looking for guidance, but also finding a cozy bit of strength in what He promises, helping us tackle our everyday ups and downs with a fresh dose of faith and hope.
At the end of the day, every journaling session brings us closer to Christ, lighting up our path with His love and grace.
I believe this process contributes to and encourages us to grow and deepen our Christian faith.
You may also find journaling and Bible Study Journaling with my book empowers us to embrace the beauty of our life stories as part of a larger narrative of grace.
A mosaic of God’s faithfulness – that’s what you’ll see over time.

Once Again, Research Matters
Studies show journaling can help process emotions, reduce anxiety, and clarify overwhelming situations.
I have an example, Christian Woman!
In my book Bible Study Journaling, I write about having negative feelings for someone I really cared about.
Journaling helped me see it and face it.
I was, in fact, jealous of her. Ugh!
Once I realized that, I had to change my thoughts and deal with my own insecurities.
Thank God I did. Further, thank God she didn’t throw me away. Instead, she helped me see that God had more for me.
That is what a friend does.
The funny thing is I now have much of what I craved back then.
My graduate degree, a fantastic family, and a strong sense of self – I had none of it.
Shucks, I was only 23! I just needed to work, and I needed to wait.
I am forever grateful that journaling played a HUGE role in saving one of my most precious friendships – one I cherish to this very day!

Bible Study Journaling Tip 3: Reflect and Revisit
Sometimes when we reread our journal entries, we find moments of breakthrough we didn’t catch the first time. We also see areas where God has been faithful—and where He’s still working.
For me, Bible study journaling helped me save a precious friendship. I had been struggling with jealousy—something I was ashamed to admit. But journaling helped me confront it, confess it, and grow from it. That level of self-awareness was life-changing.
You may begin to ask yourself contemplative questions like:
“Why do I act that way when I see her?” and “How is it I continue to do the same thing in that situation?”
These reflections often lead to deeper insights about your passions, relationships, and the impact you have on the world around you.
Journaling with the prompts from my book makes writing an introspective journey.
It can guide you through the intricate layers of your thoughts and emotions, like peeling an onion.
I find value in it because it prompts me to explore my immediate desires and the values and principles that dictate my life’s direction.
Do they line up with God’s Word? This is a question I often ask myself.

Bible Study Journaling Tip 4: Be Real
The best Bible journaling is honest and raw.
Don’t write what you think you should say—write what’s actually on your heart. Whether you’re expressing gratitude, wrestling through doubt, or writing down a verse that spoke to you, Bible study journaling is a safe place to be exactly where you are with God.
You can and should customize your journaling experience to intersect with whatever God is doing in your life.
A gratitude journal can shift your focus from what’s wrong to what’s right.
A Bible journal can help you meditate on God’s Word and apply it to daily life.
A personal reflection journal can help you work through challenges and celebrate victories.
I write about the design of each one of these!
