Bible Verses for Grieving a Mother: Scriptures That Helped Me After Losing Mine

One of the things I discovered after losing my mother is that grief is rarely predictable. Some mornings I woke up feeling strong. Other days, a song, a photograph, or even a recipe could bring me to tears.

During those moments, I found myself returning again and again to Bible Verses for Grieving a Mother.

They gave me something solid to stand on when my emotions felt unstable.

Reading Bible Verses for Grieving a Mother did not erase my sadness, but they reminded me that God was still present in it.

When I tell you that they helped me remember that grief is not a sign of weak faith, I am not kidding. Seeing those scriptures reminded me how much I need Jesus to get me through. Otherwise, He would not have put them in there for us.

Grief is not weakness. It’s a vehicle for seeing God in a new way as you lean on Him and trust Him.

Not weakness.

It is evidence that we deeply loved someone who mattered.

1. Psalm 34:18

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

This may be the most important verse in the article. It reminds grieving daughters that God moves toward broken hearts, not away from them.

See Scripture: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+34%3A18&version=NIV

2. Isaiah 41:10

“So do not fear, for I am with you…”

A reminder that grief can make us feel abandoned, but God remains present.

When my mother was living with dementia, I often felt exhausted and stretched beyond my limits.

Sister!!!! It was so hard.

After she passed away, I expected some of the pressure to disappear, but grief introduced a different kind of weight.

That is why Bible Verses for Grieving a Mother became such an important part of my daily routine. I would read them before work, during lunch breaks, and sometimes late at night when sleep would not come.

The comfort found in Bible Verses for Grieving a Mother is not based on positive thinking. It is rooted in the promises of God and His faithfulness to His children.

Many people assume that grief has an expiration date. They expect you to move on after a few months or a year. My experience has been different.

Certain dates still hurt.

Certain memories still bring tears.

In those moments, I find comfort in Bible Verses for Grieving a Mother because they remind me that God understands loss. Scripture never minimizes pain.

Sometimes I feel stupid for crying over losing my mother. After all, I’m in my 50s! But it hurts. It’s crushing regardless of how old you are.

Don’t expect yourself to get over losing someone you have known and loved your entire life in a couple of years. That’s foolish.

What I Learned About Grief After Losing My Mother

Here is what you should remember after losing your mom: grief takes as long as it takes, and there is no set timeline for healing.

People told me this, but I had no idea how true it was. this is especially true if you and she were close.

I think grief can ebb and flow unexpectedly, catching you off guard, and manifest in various ways.

It can come through sadness, anger, or even moments of joy when you remember her fondly.

Mine turned into a depression I am still fighting through.

In my personal experience, I would say embrace your feelings.

No matter how complex or overwhelming they may seem, and understand that it’s essential to give yourself the grace to process this profound loss at your own pace.

Surround yourself with supportive people who can help share in your memories, and allow yourself the time to navigate the journey of loss as you honor the beautiful relationship you had with her.

It Does Not Go Away…Ever

Grief, though it reshapes itself over time, never truly vanishes; instead, it morphs into a more gentle companion that reminds us of our cherished losses.

I feel like I live with it.

On my best days, I want to tell her about what’s going on.

Same with my worse days.

This evolving nature of grief offers us a pathway to a deeper connection with our emotions, enabling us to carry our loved ones’ memories with a lighter heart.

Some days may still feel overwhelmingly heavy. Others, we can discover comfort in the warmth of love and joy those memories bring, learning to embrace them as integral parts of our ongoing journey through life.

Certain dates still hurt. I’ve learned to make those days special – either by doing something she would like or by treating myself to something. You will figure out what works for you.

losing your mother

God can carry us even when we feel weak

The very best news I can share is that God is with you (and me) every single step of this journey. He’s carrying you so skillfully, you don’t even feel it or know it.

But, He is.

Stay close to Him in a way that works. Not a legalistic way. Your staying close may be reading one Psalm and closing the Bible. Or, playing one praise and worship song.

Do what keeps you connected to Him – even if it is just talking to Him. He understands and He loves you.

Finally… A Prayer

I am going to pray for you. You pray for me as well.

“Father, thank you for giving me a wonderful mother. Even in her imperfection, she was an incredible blessing to my life. I loved the time I had with her and the time she was able to open her heart and love me.

Please give me your comfort and peace as I get through life without her on this planet with me. Often the pain too much. Help me get through it. Help me trust you. Help me allow you to heal my broken heart.

I will get through this so I can comfort others who go through it. But, it’s just so hard.

One day at a time, Sweet Jesus. Help me through today.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen“

Listen, please stay strong as you go through this journey – and it is a journey.

I am a few years in and some days I’m as “off” as I was when it had just happened.

It takes time for a broken leg to mend and it takes time for a broken heart as well.

Stay encouraged. Stay strong and don’t expect anyone else to understand your journey.

Sure someone else may have lost a mother, but that does not mean they understand your journey.

Keep moving forward. Keep trusting Jesus. Take one day at a time.
