I love the scripture that God will turn our mourning into dancing, don’t you? Grief is a deeply human experience, one that touches all of us at some point in life. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a broken relationship, or the end of a season, the weight of grief can be overwhelming. In these moments, it’s natural to wonder, what does the Bible say about grief and mourning? I am learning in my own grief journey that the scriptures offer us comfort, guidance, and hope as we navigate the painful journey of loss.
The Bible does not shy away from the reality of grief. In fact, it acknowledges grief as a part of life and offers reassurance that God is with us in our sorrow. As we experience the waves of mourning, it’s essential to remember that grief does not make us weak or less faithful. Even Jesus Himself wept (John 11:35), showing us that it’s okay to mourn.
In Isaiah 61:2-3, God promises to comfort those who mourn and to provide beauty for ashes.
This really got me
He doesn’t merely call us to move past our grief but to allow Him to walk alongside us, transforming our sorrow into a place of hope.
Mourning is not something we have to face alone. What does the Bible say about grief and mourning? It says that God is near to us, offering us His healing and peace.
Another passage, Psalm 34:18, reassures us that “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” This is an incredible truth to hold onto when we feel like our hearts are shattered by the weight of loss. God sees our pain, and He promises to be close to us during these difficult times. If we allow Him, He will heal the brokenness we feel deep within.
In Matthew 5:4, Jesus Himself tells us, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
This verse is a beautiful reminder that mourning is not only recognized by God but also holds the potential for deep, transformative comfort.
When we mourn, we open ourselves up to receive God’s healing and the comfort only He can provide. It’s through this process of grieving that we may find the peace that surpasses all understanding.

I must focus on this promise
As Christians, we have the hope of eternal life. What does the Bible say about grief and mourning in the light of eternity?
It reminds us that death is not the final chapter.
In 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14, Paul writes, “We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.”
This powerful verse reassures us that even though we grieve, we do not grieve without hope. The pain of separation is temporary, and one day, we will be reunited with our loved ones in Christ.
Mourning can feel isolating, but we are called to support each other in these times.
I must admit that I’ve been isolating myself these days. This is a personal struggle, and I am working on it.
What does the Bible say about grief and mourning in community?Â
It tells us to bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). Look it up in your Bible.
When we grieve, we are not meant to walk the path of sorrow alone.
Sharing our pain with others—whether through prayer, conversation, or simply being present—can bring healing and comfort. The body of Christ is designed to lift each other up, especially in times of mourning.
In addition, the Bible teaches us that God can use our mourning for growth. What does the Bible say about grief and mourning as a process of spiritual transformation?Â
Grieving is not just about enduring pain but also about allowing God to refine us. Romans 5:3-5 speaks to this when it says, “Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame.”
Our grief can lead us to a deeper dependence on God, strengthening our faith and drawing us closer to Him.
In Revelation 21:4, we are promised that in the new heavens and the new earth, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
This verse offers us the ultimate hope in the face of grief. While mourning is a part of life now, there will come a day when death, sorrow, and pain will be no more. Our mourning will be turned into joy, and our hearts will be healed completely.
If you’re walking through grief right now, what does the Bible say about grief and mourning? It says that you are not alone.
God is near to you.
He sees your pain and offers you His comfort and peace. Though the journey of mourning may be long, we can trust that God will walk with us, healing our hearts and drawing us closer to Him. His promises are true, and He will bring us through the darkness of grief into the light of His love and eternal hope.

A Mini Devotional for the Question: What does the Bible say about grief and mourning?
Title: Comfort in the Midst of Grief
Scripture: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” — Matthew 5:4 (ESV)
Grief is one of life’s most difficult experiences, and it can feel like an overwhelming burden when we lose someone we love. In moments of sorrow, we may wonder where God is in the midst of our pain. But Jesus assures us in Matthew 5:4that those who mourn will be comforted.
The truth is, God doesn’t abandon us in our grief. He draws near, offering us comfort, peace, and strength in ways that go beyond understanding. Even in the darkest moments, we can trust that His presence is with us, ready to heal our broken hearts.
Mourning is a process—one that takes time, patience, and sometimes, a community to walk through it with us. But as we grieve, we are not alone. God sees our tears, hears our cries, and promises to comfort us. His love is constant, and His comfort is a balm for our wounded souls.
Prayer:
Lord, in this season of mourning, help me to feel Your comfort and peace. I trust that You are near, even when my heart aches. Thank You for walking with me through this pain and for bringing healing in Your time. Amen.
Reflection:
Take a moment to reflect on God’s promises during your time of grief. How can you invite His comfort into your heart today? Allow yourself to lean on His presence, knowing He is with you in every moment of sorrow.
