Power gifts of the Holy Spirit

Intercessory prayer

Have you ever observed someone’s spiritual or natural gift and thought, “Wow! That is so cool!” To be clear, I’m not talking evil-spirited jealousy or envy, just a strong admiration for someone’s God-given talent or proficiency in an area. For me, it’s intercessory prayer. I SO ADMIRE THAT GIFT!!! By “spiritual gift”, I mean power gifts of the Holy Spirit – or abilities He gives us.

Everyone interceeds…

Hey, I know we can all intercede and we should. Still, there is a special gift associated with intercession that some people have and others do not. Did you know that? When you pray for someone (verb) you are interceeding.

When you possess a gift empowered, fired up, and fueled by the Holy Spirit that is one of the power gifts (noun)! You are an intercessor.

I’m talking “Vroom Vroom!” Mega power from heaven empowers you to do it and do it well.

Again, I love the gift of intercession – someone stoked by the Holy Spirit to intercede for others.

A woman with power gifts of the Holy Spirit!

A perfect example is my spiritual mom and mentor Carrie Porter is a highly anointed intercessor. She is gifted to listen to others and hear trends and threads of concern. It’s wild. It really is mind-blowing!

See, you think you’re just casually chatting with her and all the while she’s detecting for what to pray for the entire time. I’ve seen her do it in restaurants, stores – everywhere!

I’m a dork..

I’ll be honest, it is a little embarrassing until she prays for that waitress or stranger. I tell you, one hundred percent of the time people say “yes”! Big burly dudes, sophisticated professionals…whatever, they ALWAYS say “yes” and let her pray for them in public!!!!

The result is consistently the same.

They break down or tear up and share their individual stories, and confirm why that prayer was so needed in their lives at that particular moment.

It’s a truly supernatural thing and regularly leaves my mouth wide open in awe.

Plus, in all the years I’ve experienced this, I’ve never once witnessed anyone be mean or dismissive of her.

Sure, they may be a little circumspect at first. But, after, it’s always the same – sheer gratitude usually followed by an intense hug or embrace.

One hundred percent of the time it begins with her signature line: “May I pray for you?

It never ceases to amaze me!

As you likely know, this doesn’t just occur in a public situation. No way. This lady is an intercessor. It happens during any and all interactions.

At the conclusion of each visit or call, like clockwork, she prays for you – remembering every single need or concern you mentioned during your time chatting!

Between you and me, I used to think she was on the other end of the phone writing down my concerns until I saw in her action with strangers. She just remembers. It’s a genuine gift. Have you ever met an intercessor like this?

Discernment…

My mom, Ethel is another one with this gift. Her’s is a little different. She is VERY discerning. You cannot pull anything on her. She always knows. This was NOT a good thing back when I was a teen!

Mom Porter would ask her “May I pray with you?”

Seriously, we all have gifts. All of the gifts are needed and necessary. Mine is exhortation. I love, love, LOVE how GotQuestions.org describes my gift:

“The gift of exhortation is a person’s unique ability to encourage and edify others. This person delights in finding Scriptures that apply to a situation and teaching others how to apply them. People with this gift are often involved in teaching, counseling, and discipleship training ministries within the church. Exhorters are among the first to find believers who are floundering in their faith. They come alongside the weaker ones to encourage, confront, if necessary, and model victorious living.” Read more here.

I thank God for my gift and operate in it often. But, I really praise God for those gifted intercessors out there.
