Have you ever wondered, what does the Holy Spirit do in the everyday life of a believer? I have. And the more I’ve walked with the Lord, the more I’ve come to appreciate the Holy Spirit’s powerful, personal, and essential role in the Christian life.

One of my favorite songs paints the picture beautifully:

Lord I hear of showers of blessings,
Thou art scattering full and free.
Showers the thirsty land refreshing,
Let some drops now fall on me.

Even me Lord, even me.
Let some drops now fall on me.

This old hymn isn’t just sentimental—it captures the heart’s cry of someone longing for the Holy Spirit’s presence. The Spirit of God is the “showers of blessings” we need more than anything else in life.

Let’s explore what the Holy Spirit does and why His work matters so much.

What Does the Holy Spirit Do? He Teaches and Instructs

At the center of my faith journey is the Holy Spirit’s voice. He is the one who teaches me, guides me, and helps me understand the Bible in a deeply personal way.

When I open the Word, He doesn’t just help me read—it’s as if He turns the light on inside my mind and heart.

Suddenly, I don’t just see the words; I understand them.

That’s one of the most powerful answers to the question what does the Holy Spirit do? 

He illuminates God’s truth in a way no human teacher ever could.

Scripture says:

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit… will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” – John 14:26 (ESV)

He helps me apply scripture to my life—sometimes in the smallest, unexpected ways.

What Does the Holy Spirit Do? He Corrects and Convicts

We often think correction is negative, but it’s one of the most loving things the Holy Spirit does for us. When I’m tempted to compromise my values or stray from God’s will, the Holy Spirit gently convicts me. It’s not harsh—it’s loving, clear, and precise.

Recently, I was renewing my driver’s license. The clerk asked if my weight had changed. For a split second, I considered giving my old weight—but that familiar nudge came.

I knew I had to be honest. It may seem minor, but that’s what the Holy Spirit does: He trains us in integrity, even when no one else is watching.

He is constantly shaping our character through conviction, helping us walk in righteousness day by day.

What Does the Holy Spirit Do? He Brings Peace

The Holy Spirit brings a peace that surpasses understanding. He goes beyond surface-level smiles and churchy catchphrases. He reaches into the most wounded, confused places of our hearts and whispers peace there.

When life feels chaotic, His calm steadies me. When decisions overwhelm me, He says, “This is the way—walk in it.” (Isaiah 30:21)

I’ve felt His comfort in moments when no words could soothe my soul. In the quiet, His presence wraps around me like a spiritual embrace. That’s not imagination—it’s the reality of what the Holy Spirit does.

What Does the Holy Spirit Do? He Heals and Restores

Another beautiful answer to the question what does the Holy Spirit do? is that He restores. He doesn’t just bandage our brokenness; He heals it from the inside out. His presence restores dignity, rebuilds hope, and brings new life to dry places.

When I’m spiritually weary, the Holy Spirit refreshes me. Just like the hymn says, His showers of blessing fall on the dry, thirsty ground of my soul and bring life again.

What Does the Holy Spirit Do? He Draws Us Closer to God

The Holy Spirit deepens our intimacy with God. He is not just a force or a feeling—He is a Person, and He reveals the heart of the Father to us.

He stirs worship in our spirit.

He reminds us of God’s promises. He makes Jesus real to us and fosters spiritual growth that transforms who we are at the core.

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” – 2 Corinthians 3:17 (NIV)

Why This Matters: The Holy Spirit Is Our Greatest Gift

While many people seek material blessings, I’ve learned the greatest gift is the presence of the Holy Spirit. He is the comforter Jesus promised—the One who walks with us, counsels us, and never leaves us alone.

We often ask for blessings without realizing that the Holy Spirit is the blessing.

He Also Gives Gifts

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are nothing to fear; in fact, they are a profound blessing!

He generously shares these awesome gifts to help us get things done here on earth.

God is so kind to let us serve others and share His messages of love and hope.

These gifts, like wisdom, understanding, and strength, push us to grow in our faith and build a closer bond with God, ultimately directing us toward our purpose. Read this verse 1 Corinthians 12:8-10:

⁸ To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 

⁹ to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 

¹⁰ to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,  and to still another the interpretation of tongues.

When we embrace these gifts, we can have some pretty amazing experiences.

Not just for us, but we can have so many experiences that bless those around us.

Spotting and using the gifts of the Holy Spirit helps us make a real difference in our communities and carry out His divine plan.

A Prayer of Gratitude

Lord, thank You for the Holy Spirit. Thank You for the still, small voice that teaches me, corrects me, comforts me, and strengthens me. I don’t take Your presence lightly. May I hunger for more of You every day and welcome the work of Your Spirit in every area of my life.
