I am in a season of needing God like never before in my life. A season of transition, where all the players in my life’s drama are being removed little by little, has unsettled me. My prayer time is loaded with prayers to get closer to God so I can be sustained by His presence and guided by His Spirit. As you know, getting closer to God isn’t a one-time event. It’s a lifelong relationship that deepens as we talk to Him, listen for His voice, and let His Word transform our hearts. Prayers to get closer to God are more than words we say — they are bridges that draw us into His presence. I’ve learned that when life feels busy, broken, or just plain overwhelming, a heartfelt prayer can open the door to the peace we desperately need.
Here’s what I’ve noticed in my own journey. First, closeness to God takes intention — we can’t drift into intimacy with Him by accident. Second, our prayers don’t have to be fancy or long; they just need to be honest.
Third, every prayer is an invitation for God to shape our thoughts, decisions, and even our emotions.
I’ve been in seasons where my prayers felt dry and distracted, and other times when my words flowed with such peace that I could almost feel His arms around me.
Wherever you are today, these prayers to get closer to God will help you connect more deeply and remind you that He’s closer than you think. I’ve written other prayers, like prayers for a new home, prayers for safe driving, prayers for anxious thoughts, and more.
Here are three things we need to remember. I’ll call them takeaway.
Takeaway One
Closeness to God grows through consistent, real conversations with Him — even in the middle of chaos.
Takeaway Two
The right prayers to get closer to God are often simple and from the heart, not rehearsed speeches.
Takeaway Three
Our relationship with God is a daily choice; prayer is the open door we walk through.
You Do You, Christian Woman
Prayer isn’t a formula, and it’s never meant to be a set of perfect words that unlock God’s attention.
These prayers are simply guides — starting points to help you focus your heart and mind on Him.
You can use them exactly as they are, or let them inspire your own words as you talk to God about what’s really on your heart. They can even serve as short devotionals, giving you a few quiet moments to pause, reflect on Scripture, and draw closer to the One who knows you best.
A Morning Prayer to Begin Your Day With God
“Lord, thank You for the gift of a new day. I choose to begin it with You. Draw my heart close to Yours. Help me hear Your voice above all others. Guide my steps and keep my spirit tender to Your leading. Amen.”
Starting the day with prayers to get closer to God sets the tone for every interaction, decision, and moment ahead. It invites His wisdom and peace before the world’s noise takes over.
A Prayer for Strength in Difficult Seasons
“Father, I feel weary. Life is heavier than I can carry on my own. Please strengthen me where I am weak. Remind me that Your grace is enough. Pull me closer to You in this trial, so I find comfort and courage in Your presence. Amen.”
Sometimes, the hardest seasons are where we learn to lean into prayers to get closer to God the most. The weight we feel becomes the very thing that drives us to His arms.
A Prayer of Repentance and Renewal
“Lord, I confess my mistakes and sins before You. Forgive me for the ways I’ve turned from Your truth. Wash me clean. Renew my mind, my heart, and my desires so that I can walk closely with You again. Amen.”
Repentance is one of the most powerful prayers to get closer to God. It clears the space between us and allows His Spirit to move freely in our lives.

A Prayer for Guidance
“Father, I don’t know what to do next. My path feels unclear. Please guide my steps and lead me toward Your will. Help me trust You completely. I know Your way is always better than mine. Amen.”
Prayers to get closer to God often bring clarity, not because every answer appears instantly, but because we gain peace knowing He’s directing our path.
A Prayer of Worship and Gratitude
“God, I praise You for who You are — my Savior, my Friend, my Redeemer. Thank You for Your goodness in my life. Even when I can’t see everything You’re doing, I trust You are working for my good. Amen.”
Worship-filled prayers to get closer to God remind us that our relationship with Him is rooted in gratitude, not just requests.
A Prayer for Trust When You’re Afraid
“Lord, fear is loud right now. Quiet my anxious thoughts with Your truth. Help me trust You when I can’t see the outcome. Keep me close to You in the middle of uncertainty. Amen.”
Fear has a way of pulling us away from God, but prayers to get closer to God anchor us in His promises.
A Prayer for Deeper Bible Study
“Father, open my eyes to see new truth in Your Word today. Let it shape my thoughts and actions. Give me a hunger to know You better through Scripture. Amen.”
The Bible and prayer work hand in hand. Studying the Word feeds our prayers, and our prayers bring life to the Word.
A Prayer for Loving Others Well
“Lord, help me to see people the way You see them. Teach me patience, kindness, and humility. Remove bitterness from my heart and replace it with compassion. Draw me closer to You so I can reflect Your love to others. Amen.”
Often, the way we treat others is a reflection of how close we are to God.
A Prayer After A Let Down
Father, my heart is aching after this disappointment. I had hoped for a different outcome, and the weight of unmet expectations feels so heavy. Lord, I give You my hurt, my confusion, and even my frustration. Remind me that You see the whole picture when I can only see this moment. Help me to believe that Your plans are still good, even when they don’t look like mine. Heal the sting in my heart, calm my racing thoughts, and restore my peace. Teach me to trust You with what’s next, knowing You will work all things for my good. Amen.
People often stay away from God when they are disappointed, as they think He will be upset with them. He’s not.
A Prayer for Stillness in a Busy Life
“Father, in all my rushing, remind me to pause and be still before You. I don’t want to miss Your voice in the middle of my to-do list. Teach me to value Your presence over my productivity. Amen.”
Slowing down long enough to pray is one of the simplest but most overlooked ways to grow in intimacy with Him.
A Prayer When You Don’t Want to Pray
Lord, I don’t even know how to start right now. My heart feels heavy, my mind feels tired, and honestly, I don’t feel like praying. You seem far away, and I’m not sure what to say. But I know You are here, even when I can’t sense You. I know You understand my silence and my tears. Please meet me in this place, Lord. Draw me closer, even if it’s just one small step today. Remind me that You haven’t let go of me and that Your love is still holding me steady. Help me trust that You are listening, even to the prayers I can’t speak out loud. Amen.
Sometimes, it can be hard to pray. Life’s pains and hurts can become inhibitors to our faith in many ways. The good news is God has absolutely no problem with that. He’s a gracious and loving Father. He understands discouragement and can handle it. Talk to Him. He will lead you back to Him little by little, just as a loving earthly father loves his child after discipline or a hard knock from life.
How These Prayers Can Shape Your Life
Over time, consistent prayers to get closer to God will change how you think, how you respond, and how you face challenges. They will shape your priorities and fill your life with the kind of peace that can’t be shaken. You’ll begin to notice that your first instinct in trouble isn’t panic — it’s prayer.
And here’s something to keep in mind — prayer is not about “getting it perfect.” It’s about showing up every day, even when you’re tired or unsure what to say.

Scriptures to Meditate on During Prayer Time
Here’s a list of scriptures to support the prayers we discussed, with brief explanations for each:
- Psalm 34:18 – “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
This verse reminds you that God is not far away in your disappointment—He draws near in your pain. - Romans 8:28 – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Even when life feels unfair, this scripture assures you that God is weaving your story for a greater good. - Isaiah 55:8-9 – “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.
This helps you rest in the truth that God sees the bigger picture, even when His ways don’t make immediate sense. - Psalm 42:11 – “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God…”
A direct encouragement to speak to your soul and anchor your emotions in hope, not despair. - Philippians 4:6-7 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God…”
This reminds you that even when it’s hard to pray, bringing your feelings to God opens the door to His peace. - Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord…
It affirms that God’s plans for your future are still filled with hope, even after disappointments.
