What are Examples of Faith in the Bible?

As someone who has walked with God for decades, I’ve seen firsthand how faith can feel both breathtakingly bold and incredibly quiet. Sometimes, faith is shouting praise from a mountaintop. Other times, it’s whispering truth to your weary soul in the middle of a storm. When my spirit feels dry or discouraged, I return to the Word and meditate on examples of faith in the Bible that reignite my trust in God’s sovereignty.

It’s not about head knowledge. It’s about real-life obedience when things don’t make sense. That’s what I’ve learned from these stories. The Bible is full of people—especially women—who responded to God in ways that can still teach us today.

Here are three truths I carry with me when studying examples of faith in the Bible:

  • Faith is not passive—it’s movement toward God, even in the dark.
  • God sees and honors faith even when others don’t.
  • The most powerful faith often rises from the most painful places.

These are genuinely principles and faith lessons that can be transformational.

I did not make them up, either. They are rooted and grounded in scripture.

I’ll show you.

Let’s look at ten examples of faith in the Bible, especially from women who modeled courage, wisdom, and endurance in powerful yet sometimes overlooked ways.

I’ll start with one of my favorite examples. Here is what I imagine Abigail to look like.

Abigail: Wisdom That Redirected a Future King

Oh, how I enjoyed researching Abigail! I even did a video about her, and I hate doing videos – at least ones that show my face.

Abigail is a lesser-known but remarkable example of faith in the Bible. Married to the harsh and foolish Nabal, she found herself in a potentially deadly conflict when Nabal insulted David, who was on the run from King Saul. David planned retaliation. But Abigail—without her husband’s knowledge—intervened with wisdom, humility, and generosity. She reminded David of God’s promises and persuaded him not to shed innocent blood.

Her faith wasn’t loud or flashy. It was strategic, grounded in God’s truth, and used to protect not only her family but David’s destiny. She discerned what was right and moved quickly to prevent bloodshed.

Zipporah: Obedience When It Was Inconvenient

Zipporah’s moment of faith was brief but unforgettable. As Moses was traveling back to Egypt to answer God’s call, the Lord sought to kill him because he had failed to circumcise his son—a clear violation of God’s covenant with Abraham.

In a moment of urgent obedience, Zipporah stepped in and circumcised her son herself. That act—bloody, uncomfortable, and deeply symbolic—saved Moses’ life. Hers is one of the rawest examples of faith in the Bible, proving that sometimes faith acts quickly and without explanation, even in matters we don’t fully understand.

The Shunammite Woman: Holding On to God’s Promise

The Shunammite woman had shown kindness to the prophet Elisha by building a room for him. In return, she was blessed with a son. Years later, that child died unexpectedly. Instead of mourning publicly or blaming God, she saddled her donkey and went to Elisha, saying, “It shall be well.”

Her words and actions reflected an unshakable confidence in God’s power to reverse death. Her story is one of the most courageous examples of faith in the Bible. She didn’t accept her situation as final—she believed God had the final say.

Rahab: Trusting a God She’d Only Heard About

Rahab wasn’t an Israelite. She was a Canaanite woman living in Jericho, a city doomed for destruction. Yet, she had heard about the God of Israel and believed He was the true God. When Israelite spies came to her home, she protected them at great personal risk.

She negotiated for her family’s safety and hung a scarlet cord from her window as a sign of her faith. Among all the examples of faith in the Bible, Rahab’s is one of the most radical—because it came from someone outside the covenant who trusted in God more than many of His own people did.

Anna from the Bible - an idea of what she could have looked like
Could Anna have looked like this?

Anna the Prophetess: Waiting in Worship

Anna lived in the temple for decades after being widowed young. Instead of becoming bitter, she spent her life in prayer and fasting, waiting to see God’s promised Messiah. When Mary and Joseph arrived with Jesus, she immediately recognized the baby as the fulfillment of God’s word.

Her life is a quiet but stunning example of faith that waits in worship. Among the examples of faith in the Bible, Anna’s story reminds us that devotion in hidden places is never wasted.

Abraham: Moving Without Knowing

God told Abraham to leave everything familiar and go to “a land I will show you.” He obeyed without knowing the destination. That’s one of the clearest examples of faith in the Bible—responding to God’s voice even when the path isn’t visible.

Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness because he trusted God’s character, not his own understanding.

Hannah: Pouring Out Her Soul

Hannah’s deep desire for a child brought her to the temple year after year. She cried out to God from her pain, promising to give the child back if He answered her prayer. God did. She gave birth to Samuel and followed through on her vow.

Hannah’s story is among the most heartfelt examples of faith in the Bible, showing us that it’s okay to bring our raw emotions to the Lord—and trust Him with our future.

The Woman With the Issue of Blood: Quiet but Unrelenting

Twelve years of bleeding. Twelve years of doctors and disappointment. But when she heard Jesus was near, this woman believed touching His garment would be enough. It was.

Her silent desperation became one of the most touching examples of faith in the Bible. Jesus not only healed her, He publicly affirmed her faith before the crowd.

Noah: Obeying Before the Rain

Noah’s faith spanned decades. God told him to build a massive ark even though rain had never fallen from the sky. He believed God’s warning and obeyed down to the smallest detail. That steady obedience preserved his family and all creation.

His story remains one of the foundational examples of faith in the Bible and a reminder that faith often means trusting God with a long view.

Here is my final imagination of what a Centurian soldier would look like.

The Centurion: Recognizing True Authority

The Roman centurion’s servant was paralyzed and in agony. But instead of demanding Jesus come to his house, he said, “Just say the word.” That single sentence astonished Jesus.

This Gentile military officer understood Christ’s divine authority better than many of the Jewish leaders. Among the examples of faith in the Bible, this one reveals that spiritual insight isn’t limited by background—it’s driven by belief.

Allow Me to Geek Out a Bit

Faith, in its basic biblical meaning, comes from the Greek word pistis (πίστις), which means trust and loyalty. It is more than just agreeing mentally; it involves a strong relationship and commitment that leads to obedience.

The Septuagint translates the Hebrew word emunah (אֱמוּנָה) as pistis, which means being steadfast and firm, particularly in relation to God’s promises.

Biblical faith is not just a static belief.

It’s a dynamic hyper-verb or trust based on God’s revealed character.

Karl Barth, a significant theologian of the 20th century, described faith as recognizing the true reality of God’s Word, emphasizing that faith arises in response to God revealing Himself (see Church Dogmatics I/1).

Therefore, faith starts with God reaching out, not with human effort, and it grows into human trust.

Theologian Thomas F. Torrance further affirms this relational understanding by explaining that “faith does not rest on itself, but on the Word of God which addresses us.”

In other words, faith does not originate from inner resolve or religious striving—it arises from encountering God’s faithfulness in Christ. Amen, right???

Torrance’s theology of koinonia (κοινωνία) highlights how faith binds us into shared participation in the Triune life, not just personal belief.

The theological richness of faith is thus both epistemic and participatory—it knows and it abides.

For a simpler academic resource, check out the article “Faith (Pistis) in the Greco-Roman World” on Early Christian Writings, which discusses how early followers changed the old ideas of trust and loyalty because of Christ’s authority.

Ultimately, true faith, according to Scripture and theological reference, is both God’s gift and our response—a surrendering trust shaped by revelation, nourished in community, and grounded in the covenant fidelity of God Himself.

That Adds Meat to the Examples

Every one of these stories proves that God notices faith—whether it’s loud or quiet, public or hidden.

These examples of faith in the Bible weren’t about perfection. They were about action, trust, and endurance.
