When Life Breaks You, God Holds You: Bible Verse for God’s Strength

Today I was texting with my friend about how scriptures can help us through hard times. She’s going through one right now, but I know God will carry her through. She’s strong in faith and knows Jesus. You know, sometimes, when life is especially hard, you need a scripture to focus on. One to hold you in faith and to ground you in spirit. That’s when I need a bible verse for God’s strength. I know for me, those times are when I especially need Him to make me strong and to be my anchor.

This has been especially true in the last few years.

Watching my mother decline from dementia tore me to pieces.

It ripped me clean.

At the same time, I needed to be sharp, creative, and alert.

I was handling all of her personal affairs and couldn’t afford to crumble.

I needed to be fiscally responsible and incredibly sharp to ensure her care was top-notch and every penny was handled as she would have liked.

Besides that, I was working full-time, married, and supporting my son toward graduation.

At the same time, my oldest moved away. Then after Mom passed, my brother died suddenly within eight months. It has been a horrible time.

Oh yeah, I lost my job, too.

All of this in the span of a couple years.

Deep theology wasn’t helpful.

I was operating on too few resources—emotionally and spiritually—because I was wounded, trying to heal, and trying to keep going.

God’s Word, whether sung or read, was my mainstay.

It kept me fueled. It kept me grounded.

It kept me focused on Him.

Finding a Bible Verse for God’s Strength

When I think about what kept me standing, it wasn’t some big spiritual revelation.

It was simple verses that reminded me God is still God, even when I’m barely hanging on. I needed a bible verse for God’s strength that wasn’t about perfection—but about survival.

One of the first scriptures I clung to was Psalm 46:2: “Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.” That image of the earth giving way felt exactly like my world collapsing. But the verse didn’t stop there—it told me not to fear. It was God’s quiet reminder that He still had me, even as everything else shook.

I’ve learned that a Bible verse for God’s strength doesn’t always make you feel instantly strong.

Sometimes it just helps you not fall apart.

Sometimes, it’s the whisper in your spirit that helps you breathe when your heart is shattered.

What These Verses Taught Me About Endurance

As I journaled through grief, certain verses became almost like companions.

I wrote them on sticky notes, in my phone, and on mirrors. They followed me into my workdays and my sleepless nights.

Isaiah 40:31 says, “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles.” That one verse taught me waiting isn’t passive -it’s a sacred pause where God restores you. When I had no energy to pray fancy prayers, I whispered that verse like medicine.

Another Bible verse for God’s strength that meant everything was 2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

Those words allowed me to admit weakness without shame.

In my old perfectionist world, I thought being strong meant doing everything myself.

But God showed me that admitting weakness opened the door for His strength to show up.

That’s a hard truth, especially for women who carry so much.

We’re caregivers, workers, wives, mothers, and friends. It’s easy to believe our strength must come from hustle or endurance. But when I learned to look for a bible verse for God’s strength instead of my own, the peace came back.

More Scriptures For You

Actually, I have so many because God’s Word is chock full of spiritual encouragement for us to live this thing called life.

I’m going to share with you those verses I shared with my friend. Remember, I mentioned her earlier?

See, she’s going through a hard season, too. I want her to have a litany of scriptures she can run to on the days when her mind is whirling as mine was during my deepest season of struggle.

Here are the ones the Holy Spirit gave me.

Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
Psalms 46:2

How about I Peter 5:7?

It says:

Who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.

Why I like this one: Sometimes, it helps me to be reminded that my struggles are for a purpose. but also that God’s mighty power shields me.

What about this one:

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
Psalm 34:18

You can’t beat this one:

Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.
John 14:1

This one is one of my favorites:

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 14:27

When Faith Meets Reality

Sometimes people think having faith means we don’t break. But we do. Faith just means we break in His direction.

I still remember crying in my car one morning after leaving the nursing home. I couldn’t handle another day of decline. I turned on a song that quoted Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

It wasn’t a proud declaration—it was a plea. I whispered it through tears, “Lord, help me do this one more day.” And He did.

That’s what a bible verse for God’s strength does—it shifts your focus from your breaking point to God’s sustaining power.

Lessons I’ve Learned Along the Way

I’ve noticed that every season of my life has had a theme verse. During my mother’s illness, it was Psalm 46. During my brother’s passing, it was Isaiah 40:31. During the quiet seasons afterward, it became Nehemiah 8:10: “Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Each one became a living, breathing bible verse for God’s strength. The words didn’t just comfort me—they shaped how I saw God. I no longer saw Him as distant or academic. I saw Him as a Father steadying His child in the storm.

What I Took Away

The first thing I learned is that strength from God rarely feels like adrenaline. It feels like grace. It shows up quietly, in the stillness of 3 a.m. when your heart won’t stop aching.

The second thing is that the Word works even when you’re too tired to “work it.” You don’t have to dissect every passage or understand Hebrew roots. Just read it, speak it, and let it breathe life into you.

Finally, I learned that sharing your verses matters. The day I texted my friend the scriptures that carried me, she replied, “I didn’t realize I could ask God to help me just get through today.” That’s it. That’s the ministry of a bible verse for God’s strength—it passes from heart to heart.

The Strength We Don’t See Coming

God’s strength often doesn’t look like what we expect. Sometimes it’s a deep calm that shows up before the storm hits. Sometimes it’s clarity during chaos. Other times, it’s simply the power to not give up when quitting feels justified.

The Bible says in Psalm 73:26, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

That’s the verse that still brings me peace today. It’s the reminder that my capacity is limited, but His is not.

If you’ve ever wondered where to start when life unravels, open your Bible and search for a Bible verse for God’s strength. Write it down. Pray it out loud. Repeat it when you’re numb.

Over time, you’ll find your voice again. You’ll notice the verses start to sink deeper, almost like spiritual muscle memory.

Applying This in Daily Life

In my own walk, I’ve learned to weave Scripture into ordinary routines.

When I fold laundry, I recite a verse.

When I walk on my treadmil, I try to whisper another. Sometimes I even play BibleGateway Audio just to hear the Word as I move through my day. The YouVersion Bible does the same.

The Word becomes more than text—it becomes breath. That’s the power of a bible verse for God’s strength.

If you’re going through something heavy right now, you don’t have to fake joy.

Just lean into truth.

Breathe.

Start where you are.

Maybe that means opening Psalm 46 or Philippians 4:13. Let those verses meet you right where the ache lives.

Over time, you’ll feel God’s quiet renewal. Not in fireworks – but in peace that makes no sense without Him.

A while ago, I wrote about meditating on God’s word here You can read about that here.

Meditating is simply ruminating over scripture. Thinking about it. Or, it can even be writing it over and over.

That’s like vitamins. They work best when you take them daily – not just take one when you feel sick.

I think scripture is the same.

Closing Thoughts

You don’t have to have all the answers. You just need to stay connected to the Source. A bible verse for God’s strength can do what even our closest friends can’t—remind us who we are and whose we are.

Maybe today your heart feels weary. That’s okay. Find your verse. Sit with it. Let it breathe. And know that you are not walking through your pain alone.

Because the same God who spoke those words centuries ago is still speaking them to you now: “My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

That’s not just Scripture. That’s survival.

If you have time, would you say a prayer for my friend? Thanks! <3
